From the Mists IV - Rainbow Trout - 18x24 - Digital Painting - 2021

As I grow older, and further from the memories of my childhood, I sometimes struggle to remember some parts of my youth. There are plenty of things though that I'm sure I will never forget. When I was a young boy, my father would take my brothers and I camping. I don't know how you do camping, but we drove to the end of a mountain road and then walked for a day with everything we thought we would need strapped to our backs.

I learned an appreciation for nature on those trips, and especially how lucky we are for the nature that is the backyard for all Montanans. Catching a fish on those trips meant dinner, meant energy enough to make it back to the car in a couple of days. On some trips we were lucky, so much so that we would catch and release every fish we didn't need to eat. On others we struggled making us value each catch more and more.

When I think of iconic Montana wildlife, Rainbow Trout are certainly on the list, but in a unique capacity. Hidden in the water, it's not the most popular or visible creature, but it is vital and its rainbow scales remind us of the splendor we occupy in Big Sky Country.
