In Freedom's Breath - 20x40 - Digital Painting - 2009

The concept of 'freedom' is one I often reflect on. I live in the 'land of the free' after all. Thing is, are we really free? Do we really even want to be free?

Maybe you view freedom in terms of self in that you want to be free, but others... not so much. Perhaps you need the stability and grind of a world where you are a slave to your boss, your credit cards, your bank, your family, your faith. Maybe you find salvation there that is worth more than freedom.

The rub of freedom is the fear that comes along with it. Surely you won't do anything wrong, but maybe they or it will. It's the bolt of excited terror that dances through your gut down into your toes as you peer over the edge of a cliff hoping that an updraft of wind will keep you from the plunge.

Freedom is, perhaps, more complicated than you thought.
